Rescuers assist overturned Foot Lake canoeists
Emergency service rescuers guided three young men and their canoe to shore after their canoe overturned in Foot Lake Tuesday night.
Willmar Police received a call at 7:21 p.m. that three people were in the water. Information received indicated the canoeists were not wearing life jackets and they appeared to be strug-gling to stay afloat.
The Kandiyohi County Rescue Squad and a Kandiyohi County Sheriff water safety deputy were dispatched to assist. Responding officers located the individuals about 150 yards offshore of the Kandiyohi County Fairgrounds area.
Police Sgt. Jim Felt said it appeared that one person was able to re-enter the canoe and was paddling to shore while the other two held onto the sides of the canoe.
The canoeists were guided to the shore near Woodland Avenue Northwest where the men, ages 17, 19 and 20, said they were unharmed.
Police were also assisted by Willmar Ambulance Service.
All units cleared the area at 10 p.m. Weather conditions at the time were clear, but windy with choppy waves, said Felt.
