Retirements continue at utility
Willmar Minnesota 2208 Trott Ave. SW / P.O. Box 839 56201

WILLMAR — Retirements of longtime employees at the Willmar Municipal Utilities are continuing.

During Monday’s Municipal Utilities Commission meeting, General Manager Wesley Hompe announced the retirement of Bart Murphy after more than 30 years with the utility. Murphy currently serves as water and district heating superintendent. Murphy thanked past and present commissioners and general managers for the opportunity to have a great career in Willmar.

Hompe also announced that Rich Maxfield, line department supervisor, will be retiring May 9 after 34 years.

Hompe said well over 30 percent of the staff has retired during the last two to three years, and he’s looking at the potential retirement of another 30 percent of the staff in the next three to five years. The retirements are coming because so many people were hired all at the same time 35 years ago.

Hompe said the utility is losing people with considerable institutional knowledge and experience. But he said the new people coming in have fresh eyes and possibly new ideas and ways for doing things.
