The Rev. Lowell D. Johnson Jan. 16, 1927 - Sept. 9, 2009
KERKHOVEN -- The Rev. Lowell D. Johnson, 82, of Kerkhoven died Wednesday at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Evangelical Free Church in Kerkhoven with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven and one hour prior to the service at the church.
He was born Jan. 16, 1927, on a farm near Ellsworth, Wis., to Herman and Pearl (Johnson) Johnson. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from high school in 1945 in Ellsworth, Wis. He attended Bethel College in St. Paul; North Park College in Chicago and completed his studies at St. Paul Bible College with a bachelor of science and theology degree in 1956. He was ordained on Aug. 10, 1962.
He married Elaine Elsberry on May 25, 1957, in Brunswick, Neb. He began his ministry with the American Sunday School Union in northern Minnesota for two years then served his remaining years with the Evangelical Free Church of America. He served in Isle, Elk River and Kerkhoven in Minnesota and Wayland and Baxter in Iowa. He was an interim pastor in Paynesville, Windom, Hector, Appleton in Minnesota and Albert City, Iowa. After about 40 years in the ministry, they retired in Broken Arrow, Okla., in 1996. They returned to Kerkhoven in 2003, due to his health and, in 2008, he entered Bethesda Pleasantview Memory Care Unit.
He is survived by his wife; children: Vickie Johnson of Antioch, Calif., Anita (and Curt) Poverud of Coweta, Okla., and Ritchie (and Janet) Johnson of Kerkhoven; and five grandchildren.
