NEW LONDON - Richard "Dick" D. Palmquist age 83, of New London died on Sunday, October 13, 2013, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. His funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in New London. www.hafh.org
Richard "Dick" Donald Palmquist was born on December 9, 1929, at the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Hjalmer and Ruth (Gustafson) Palmquist. The family moved to New London, MN in 1932. Dick was baptized at his parents home on November 5, 1939. He was a member of Oak Knoll Lutheran Church for many years, joining Peace Lutheran Church on October 13, 1996.
Dick attended a country school and Willmar and New London High School.
On July 9, 1949, Dick married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Peterson of Willmar. This union was blessed with three children. They were able to share in 64 years of marriage before his death.
Dick worked for Lovering Construction taking him to Grand Forks, North Dakota. He then moved to Minneapolis working at Honeywell and then National School Studios, now known as Lifetouch. Dick started his career at Lifetouch as a camera repair man, promoting in the company to Corporate Vice President of production. During his career his job took him to Connecticut, California, Nevada, Indiana, Canada and Germany. After 40 years with Lifetouch he retired in 1989. After retirement Dick and Ruth wintered at their home in Florida, returning to their home on Lake Andrew in the summer. Enjoying this yearly until two years ago, when his health failed.
Dick loved the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, and golfing. He was a member of the Little Crow Country Club, Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Florida, and was a charter member of the New London Hunting Club. Dick enjoyed family and friends and his home was always open.
His family fondly remembers his great sense of humor, teasing nature, quick wit and the ability to always have the best last word. He loved having his family around and we were blessed to be able to surround him during his death.
Richard "Dick" Palmquist died on Sunday evening October 13, 2013, at Rice Memorial Hospital at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Gary of New London, Sherry (Douglas) Wadsworth of New London; eight grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ilo Palmquist of New London; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Terry; and his brother, Merle.
