MINNEAPOLIS -- The Ridgewater Warriors capped off the season with a pair of wins and finished fifth in the MCAC state tournament this past weekend.

After falling to high-scoring Vermilion in the state opener on Friday, the Warriors (18-11) routed Hibbing 75-55 in the consolation semifinals on Saturday and then rolled over Fergus Falls 90-62 on the fifth-place game.

"I thought we played our best game of the season against Fergus," said Ridgewater coach Bob Knutson. "Starting with the second half of the Hibbing game and through the Fergus game, we played very well. We passed the ball well and shot well. I couldn't be more pleased."

The Warriors trailed Hibbing 33-32 at halftime before playing like a different team in the second half.

Ridgewater's Casey Sussenguth was named to the All-Tournament team. The freshman forward from Willmar had a double-double in all three games and finished with 50 points and 35 rebounds.

Sussenguth and Cory Nietfeld were also named All-State and All-Division. It was the second straight year that Nietfeld, a sophomore forward from Paynesville, was named All-State.

Saturday's game

Ridgewater 75, Hibbing 55

Trailing 33-32 at haltime, the Warriors outscored Hibbing 43-22 in the second half.

Sussenguth paced the Warriors with 16 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Nietfeld notched 14 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Ben Moser chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds and Shawn Neu had three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.

Ridgewater shot 50 percent from the field.

Nietfeld led five players in double figures with 18 points. Sussenguth had 15 points and 13 rebounds, Moser had 14 points and seven boards, and Neu and Tom Boike had 11 points apiece.

The Warriors made only 4-of-18 three-pointers, For the second straight game, Neu had three 3-pointers.

The Warriors got a boost at halftime from a thunderous dunk by Nietfeld at the buzzer after a perfect feed from Sussenguth on an inbounds play.

Jordan Johnsrud, a former Minnewaska Area player, led Fergus Falls with 14 points and six rebounds.
