SATURDAY: NORTHLAND (1-1) AT RIDGEWATER (2-0), 2 P.M. AT HODAPP FIELD

PIONEERS OVERVIEW: The South Division teams went 5-0 against the North the first week and 4-1 the second. Through two rounds, Northland is clearly the class of the MCAC North. The Pioneers lost only 39-34 at Rochester in Week 1. At Thief River Falls last Saturday, PK/WR Aaron Doriot was 7 of 7 on PATs and caught 5 passes for 187 yards and 3 TDS. QB Justan Taliaferro has thrown for 456 yards with 4 TDs and 6 INTs. RB Darian Nelson has rushed for 125 yards in 21 carries and 3 TDs.

WARRIORS OVERVIEW: Many travel to Ely to vacation in the great outdoors, especially the Boundary Waters. The Warriors played like tourists on a lark last Saturday; though they still paddled to victory. A care-free effort against a very good Northland team will not go unpunished. “Our blocking and tackling were terrible,” said head coach Rob Baumgarn this week while reviewing film of the Vermilion game. “Our running backs were not seeing the hole, when there was one, and we’re not getting any blocking from the fullback.” Beau Stough (Redwood Valley) will be moved from tight end to fullback this week to take advantage of his athleticism and 6-foot-4, 235-pound frame. Neither Trevor Nystrom nor Wes Oswald looked good behind center, leaving Baumgarn to ponder (pun intended) if he has a quarterback crises. Who did play well defensively? The head coach cited MCAC South Player of the Week Luke Blanch, a first-year LB from Plain City, Utah; sophomore DE Chris Hanson, from New Prague, and CB Deshon Johnson, a freshman from Cleveland, Ohio. It will take a lot more than those three against the Pioneers.
