Ridgewater opens today at national tournament
ROCHESTER -- The Ridgewater College Lady Warriors open national tournament play at noon today against Tompkins Cortland CC (N.Y.).
Eight teams are vying for the NJCAA Division III softball national title during the three-day event at the McQuillan Softball Complex.
The Willmar junior college plays a second game later in the afternoon in the double-elimination format.
Ridgewater (36-8) is playing in its first national field since 2008, the last of four straight appearances.
Tompkins Cortland (32-6) is making its third straight national tournament appearances, including a national title in 2009 and a fourth-place finish last year.
Tompkins pitcher Ashley Snyder has recorded 144 strikeouts and has a 1.94 ERA this season.
Ridgewater is led by the sophomore trio of shortstop Emily Roelike, catcher Brandi Bodin and first baseman Sara Beyer. Freshman pitcher Andrea Krause has a 20-3 record and a 1.70 ERA.
In other first-round match-ups Anne Arundel (Md.) CC (17-14) plays Gloucester County (N.J.) College (43-5), College of DuPage at Chicago (46-6) takes on Monroe (N.Y.) CC (27-17) and Suffork County (N.Y.) College (21-18) meets Itasca CC (30-14).
