Ridgewater second at state; regions next

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- In an intense match between two perennial volleyball powers, Rochester outlasted Ridgerwater in the MCAC state championship match, 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 15-9 on Sunday at Northland College.

"It was an exciting match," said Ridgewater coach Joe Sussenguth. "There's a history there between the teams and the energy level was outstanding."

Rochester rallied to win the final two games, bolting to an 8-3 lead in the final game and never looked back.

"We kind of fell apart a little bit in our serve receive in stretches," said Sussenguth. "And we were what I like to call 'nickel-and-dimed' on some points in that (Rochester) had some hits and a couple of serves that hit the tape and rolled down. But in the final game, we fell victim to one of their jump servers."

Ridgewater went 3-2 in the two-day tournament and now stands 24-9 as it host the Region 13 tournament Friday and Saturday.

Karie Blommel paced the Lady Warriors with 46 kills in the five matches. Jordan Olerud added 39 kills and Carina Fesenmaier notched 162 assists and a team-high 18 ace serves.
