ROCHESTER -- Ridgewater's bid for a national title in softball was squashed on the first day of the NJCAA Division III Tournament as the Lady Warriors lost their first two games Thursday.

The Lady Warriors (36-10) entered the tournament as the No. 2-ranked team in the nation. But they couldn't get a hit when they really needed one as they fell to Tompkins Cortland Community College of New York 5-3 in eight innings in the quarterfinals and 6-4 to Itasca in a consolation game.

"We played two very good teams and we were right there with them," said Ridgewater coach Todd Thorstad. "We outhit Itasca and had the same amount of hits as Tompkins, but we couldn't just piece them together."

The Lady Warriors will wrap up their season today when they play Anne Arundel CC of Maryland at noon in the seventh-place game.

Ridgewater never owned a lead in its first game, but Sara Beyer's solo home run and Bevin Williams' RBI single in the sixth tied the game at 3-3.

Emily Roelike doubled with one out in the seventh for Ridgewater, but was stranded at second when the inning ended. Tompkins then broke a two-inning scoring drought in the eighth when Chelsea Houtunbrink slugged a two-run double off Ridgewater starter Andrea Krause.

Williams singled for her third hit of the game after two quick outs in the Ridgewater eighth, but she too was stranded when the inning ended. The Lady Warriors left five runners in scoring position.

Samantha Cunningham's double in the fifth opened the scoring for the Lady Warriors.

The loss dropped Ridgewater into the consolation bracket against Itasca, a team it beat twice, once during its spring trip to Florida and again at the MCAC State Tournament two weeks ago.

The Lady Warriors again never had a lead as Itasca got a two-run homer in the first inning off Shannon Heitz. Roelike scored on Krause's sacrifice fly in the bottom half, but Itasca plated four runs over the last four innings to stay head. Another two-run homer in the fifth gave the Vikings the lead for good.

Ridgewater strung together five consecutive hits in the fifth to produce three runs. Cunningham started the surge with a single, Roelike doubled Cunningham over to third, Brandi Bodin then singled in Cunningham, Beyer then knocked in Roelike with a single and Krause singled in Bodin to get the Lady Warriors within two

Nicole Gross didn't issue a walk and fanned seven Lady Warriors to earn the complete-game win.
