Ridgewater softball second in state

SAUK RAPIDS -- The Ridgewater Lady Warriors have been a solid-hitting team all season.

But two Central Lakes pitchers held them to one run in two games en route to winning the MCCC State Tournament this past weekend.

Ridgewater won three of five games in the two-day tournament, including a dramatic come-from-behind win over Rainy River as first baseman Britney Glisczinski hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and then came up again in the seventh with the bases loaded and cleared the right-center field fence again for a grand slam and a 9-7 victory.

Ridgewater, which has already qualified for Friday and Saturday's region tournament in Willmar by winning the Southern Division title, opened the state tournament Saturday with a 7-2 win over Itasca on Calie Rittenour's four-hitter.

Ridgewater then beat Rainy River behind Glisczinski's six RBI, giving the win to Heather Thoma. The Lady Warriors overcame 15 strikeouts from Jen Falk.

In the winner's bracket semifinal on Sunday Central Lakes pitcher Olivia Graham cooled off the Ridgewater bats on a four-hitter in a 4-0 win.

Ridgewater then came back in the elimination bracket final to rout Fergus Falls 9-0 on a one-hitter by Thoma, who was one out away from a perfect game. Shortstop Kristen Hegna had three of the Lady Warriors' 15 hits in the game.

Central Lakes won the championship game, 2-1, as Mallorie Brewer scattered 11 hits for the win.

"We had a lot of chances," said Ridgewater coach Todd Thorstad. "We left 11 runners on bases, including the bases loaded in the third inning."

Hegna had nine hits and three RBI for the Lady Warriors (23-4). Third baseman Brittany Ribar collected eight hits, left fielder Tara Thielke and right fielder/pitcher Patina Queenan six each and Rittenour and Glisczinski five apiece.

In the Region 13 tournament on Friday, Fergus Falls and Madison Technical College meet at 1 p.m. with the winner playing Ridgewater at 3 p.m.

Rittenour walked one and struck out four to improve her season record to 12-1.

Hegna, Thielke, Queenan and Ribar had two hits apiece to lead the Lady Warriors' 11-hit attack. Thielke drove in two runs.

Trailing 6-2 in the top of the sixth, Ridgewater got a pair of runs on a double by Rittenour and Glisczinski's two-run homer over the right-center field fence.

In the seventh, Ridgewater cut the deficit to 6-5 on a run-scoring single by Queenan. Glisczinski then cleared the bases.

Thoma scattered 11 hits in six innings for the win., walking one and striking out three. Rittenour came in to pitch the seventh and gave up one run on four hits before earning the save.

Hegna, Thielke and Glisczinski had two hits each. Dorothy Saulsbury rapped a double.

Ribar had two of the Lady Warriors' five hits off Graham, their lowest hit total in a game this season. She walked one and struck out four.

Rittenour took the loss, giving up eight hits in going the distance. She walked one and struck out five.

Thoma was two strikes away from a perfect game when Melissa Walvathre singled up the middle. She then got the final out to finish with a one-hitter and improve her record this season to 9-0. She struck out three.

Ridgewater scored all nine of its runs in the third inning.

The Lady Warriors amassed 15 hits, led by Hegna with three to go along with two RBI. Glisczinski had two hits and two RBI, finishing with eight RBI for the tournament. Saulsbury had two hits and an RBI and Ribar also had two hits.

Despite a good pitching performance from Patina Queenan, the Lady Warriors lost. Queenan allowed only six hits, while walking three and striking out five.

Hegna, Thielke, Ribar and Ashley Schmeling had two hits apiece for the Lady Warriors.
