Ridgewater splits with Rochester

ROCHESTER -- Ridgewater College softball stole a win from the No. 2 team in the nation Friday, thanks to a complete-game pitching performance from Heather Thoma and an offensive explosion.

The Lady Warriors split an MCAC doubleheader with Rochester, winning 6-4 in the first game but losing 12-2 in the second.

Thoma gave up four runs on eight hits in the Lady Warriors' win, but Ridgewater's hitters also tallied 17 hits.

Ashley Schmeling and and Jodi Merritt both went 3-for-4 in the first game and Aubrey Rand drove in three runs from two hits.

Ridgewater's victory handed Rochester its first conference loss and second loss of the season.

After Thursday's split, Ridgewater sits with a 9-6 overall record and 5-1 conference record.

Rochester is 16-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play.

Despite the split decision, Ridgewater remains tied for the conference lead.

Game One

Ridgewater 6, Rochester 4

The Lady Warriors jumped ahead right away on Rochester, scoring three runs in the first inning. and had built up a 5-0 lead after the fifth.

But the Yellow Jackets closed the gap with four runs in the fifth. Ridgewater added one insurance run in the seventh.

Danyel Stoufer, Tara Thielke, Aubrey Wren, Sam Drees and Kayla Terres added two hits apiece to the Ridgewater attack. Stoufer and Drees drove in one run each and Kim Brill had the other Lady Warriors' hit.

Thoma struck out four without issuing a walk.

Kelly Shaner and Wendy Haues had two hits each for Rochester.

Ridgewater's Kristin Kahle struggled to limit Rochester's hitters as four of the Yellow Jackets starters went 2-for-3 each. Rochester's Kate Loken also hit a two-run home run, just one of her three hits in six at-bats Thursday.

Rochester's Deanna Mock pitched five innings in the second game, giving up two runs on four hits as her offense tallied 12 runs for the 10-run rule.

Ashley Schmeling drove in one run for the Lady Warriors and Kahle had the other.
