Road conditions fair to difficult, State Patrol advising no travel

Thursday morning update

WILLMAR — Road conditions in west central Minnesota are listed in fair to difficult condition and the State Patrol is advising no unnecessary travel in the region.

Road conditions in the Willmar and surrounding area are in fair condition, with slippery roadways, icy patches and blowing snow, to difficult condition, with drifting snow on the roadway, blowing snow and reduced visibility.

MnDOT has listed multiple highways along the border with North Dakota as hazardous, with travel not advised on those roads. As of 10 a.m., there were no road closures listed in the state.

The blizzard warning issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until midnight, with observed wind gusts from 50 to 55 mph recorded in the Red River Valley area.

The weather conditions are expected to deteriorate this morning, with northwest winds from 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph. There will be near zero visibilities, especially in open areas.

The Weather Service says it is 16 degrees in Willmar, with a 2 below wind chill and northwest winds at 22 mph. The temperature will fall to 3 degrees by 4 p.m. with wind chills to 23 below, wind gusts 30 to 35 mph and less than a half inch of snow.
