Rochester edges Stingers, 2-1
ROCHESTER -- Jason Kurth's two-out single scored Matt Beyer with the winning run in the 10th inning as Rochester slipped past the Willmar Stingers 2-1 on Sunday at Mayo Field.
The Stingers beat the Honkers 9-1 on Saturday night.
Willmar reliever Scott Zuloaga got the first two outs in the 10th before Beyer singled and Aaron Siefken walked. Kurth then singled to center field.
Willmar got on the board first when Tyler Zupcic singled leading off the fourth inning. Jason Leblebijian then reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Jake Stinnett singled to left field to plate Leblebijian.
That was all the Stingers would get off Siefken, who allowed four hits over six innings, while walking one and striking out five.
Jordan Jakubov pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Honkers. Hector native Bryce Rippentrop, who pitched for the Alexandria Beetles last season, earned the win with two hitless innings of relief.
Rochester tied the game in the fifth inning on a walk, a double by Devin Thaut and a groundout.
Tanner Banks started on the mound for the Stingers and allowed only one hit over four innings of work. He walked three and struck out three. Michael Shreves followed and was touched for four hits and one run over 22/3 innings. He walked one and fanned two. Jason West, the third Stingers pitcher, pitched 11/3 scoreless innings before Zuloaga took over in the ninth.
Willmar plays a two-game series at the Alexandria Beetles starting today before returning home for Baseball Night on Wednesday against the Beetles. The first 250 kids 14-and-under will receive a free Stingers logo baseball.
Stingers drub Honkers, 9-1
ROCHESTER -- The Willmar Stingers snapped a two-game losing streak in a big way on Saturday, routing Rochester 9-1 before 1,112 fans at Mayo Field.
Anthony Consiglio pit-ched five scoreless innings to earn the victory in his first start of the season, allowing only one hit while striking out five. Chris Gonzales gave up just one hit over the next three innings while recording three strikeouts. Jack Shannon made his first appearance for the Stingers and gave up one unearned run while striking out one hitter in the ninth.
Willmar scored its first run in the third inning when Sean Dwyer came home on an RBI groundout by Jarid Scarafiotti, who picked up another RBI in the sixth when his single plated Jason Leblebijian. The Stingers scored twice more in the frame on separate passed balls.
Scarafiotti finished the game 1-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Leblebijian has at least one hit in all four games this season for Willmar.
Anthony Hincy led the Stingers with three hits in five at-bats. John Haberman and Jake Stinnett each went 2-for-5. Haberman picked up his second RBI of the season on a double in the eighth inning.
