The Cardinals were steamrolled 10-0 in the first game, their fifth straight loss to start the season.

But it was a different team in Game Two.

“We played very aggressive,” said Willmar coach Mark Stier. “Cole Christensen threw a great five innings. We answered the call.”

The Cards host St. Cloud Apollo on Thursday and St. Cloud Tech (doubleheader) on Friday.

Game One

Rocori 10, Willmar 0

The Spartans looked polished for so early in a 10-0 win with the temp on the board in right-center reading 58 degrees.

The game featured a five-inning no-hitter by junior righty Jordan Torborg. He walked three and fanned five. Only one ball left the infield, a lazy fly to shallow left-center off the bat of Cole Christensen in the fourth, when Willmar did get two on by a walk and the Spartans’ only error.

Rocori leadoff Alex Budde led the offensive assault with three hits, a sac fly and five RBI.

Brandon Wedel pitched into the fourth inning leaving with two on and no out in favor of Zach Radermacher, who was already penciled in to see innings in the opener.

That proved a bright moment as Radermacher pitched out of the jam with first baseman Adam Nibaur getting all three putouts on consecutive fine infield plays, where Willmar did look solid.

Webel gave up some hard hits but also was hurt by shaky fielding (one throwing error and two misplayed balls in outfield) augmented by the four walks he issued. Rocori also ran the bases hard, including several double steals.

Game Two

Willmar 7, Rocori 5

The Cardinals, batting first, jumped out 5-0 in three at bats and led 7-2 after four by taking advantage of six walks issued by Rocori starter Justin Kunkel.

Leadoff Tony McCleary walked leading off the first and the fourth and scored each time. Cole Hagen and Bryce Broman drove in runs.

Over five innings, Christensen gave up five hits, walked two, hit three but hung tough while getting big plays from the defense, which had just a single error. He stranded two Rocori runners in both the fourth and fifth.

Reliever Adam Nibaur, moving over from first base, got the save. The rangy senior got a strikeout to end the sixth after one run had scored and got the final out with the tying run at the plate.
