LITCHFIELD -- Roland Donald Scharmer, 80, of Litchfield, died Thursday at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Burial will be in Lake Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church and for one hour prior to the service Monday. Memorials to First Lutheran Church are preferred. Arrangements are by Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield.

He was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Waconia to Theodore and Ottelia (Rudloff) Scharmer. He grew up in Waconia and graduated from Waconia High School. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter in 1950 with a bachelor's degree. He was drafted into the Army and served from 1951 until 1953.

He married Lorraine Sjolinder on Jan. 24, 1953, in St. Paul. He received his master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1954. They moved to Litchfield and he taught in the Litchfield Public Schools from 1954 until 1986. He also worked part time as a crop insurance adjuster from 1963 until 2000.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Litchfield Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife; children: Mark (and Meg) Scharmer of Lakeville, Neal (and Kathy) Scharmer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Karen (and Mike) Hendrickson of Albert Lea and Paul (and Amanda) Scharmer of Covington, La.; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
