Rudolph Gilbertson Aug. 8, 1906 - Aug. 24, 2009
MONTEVIDEO -- Rudolph Gilbertson, 103, of Montevideo, died Monday at Valin Senior Care in Montevideo.
The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Jevnaker Lutheran Church of rural Montevideo.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Montevideo with a prayer service at 6 p.m. and for one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born Aug. 8, 1906, to Abraham and Laura (Brown) Gilbertson. He attended country school in Chippewa County. As a young man, he worked at various occupations including a shipyard crane operator in Mobile, Ala., and a streetcar operator and welder in Minneapolis.
He married Charlotte Anderson on Nov. 16, 1940, in Minneapolis. He served in the Army and was an expert marksman. He was honorably discharged in 1944. They returned to Chippewa County in 1948 and farmed north of Montevideo. He was a member of Jevnaker Lutheran Church. He moved to Valin Senior Care earlier this summer.
He is survived by his children: Yvonne Jensen of Farmington; Carol (and Gerald) VanZyl of Montevideo and David (and Karmie) Gilbertson of Montevideo; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2001, three brothers and three sisters.
