Running: 182 for Frozen 5k on 25-degree morning

SPICER -- The Frozen 5k turned into the Frosty 5k on Saturday morning.

Trees and shrubs along Lake Avenue South were painted with hoarfrost, the air still. The digital sign out front Zorbaz Restaurant, formerly Melvin's, blinked 25 degrees.

Sure beat the last three years of either crackling cold or bitter rain.

The mild day brought in 52 walk-ups for the 9 a.m. start. There were 182 runners wearing a disposable chip timed by Pickle Events.

That number compares to 94 last year on Jan. 22 when the mercury was at minus-8 and 90 diehards in 2010 when rain fell. The record entry is 233 in 2007.

The overall winner on the 3.1-mile jaunt was Joel Dudgeon, 45, of Wabasso, in 17:40. The Canby native, who is a teacher, frequently runs in the Glacial Ridge Championship Series. Kyle Eckhoff, 25, of Willmar, a former runner at Minnesota State, Moorhead, took second. He and 15-year-old Ben Burgett of Spicer, along with Dudgeon, were at the front until the latter separated in the last mile to win by nine seconds.

In the female division, McKenzie Holt, 16, a junior at St. Cloud Christian finished in 18:28, fifth overall, nine seconds back of fourth-place Steven Lueders of Kandiyohi.

This was her first Frozen 5k but she has competed (and won) at a cross-country meet at nearby Little Crow CC. In November, she placed fourth in the Class A state meet at Northfield.

Kristine Duininck, 38, of Spicer was second in 21:15 and Heather Nelson, 35, of Montevideo third in 21:25.

The 5k leads off the 12-event Glacial Series. Next up is the St. Patrick's Day Red Beard Run from the Oaks Restaurant in Willmar on March 17.
