Running: 482 runners get Leg up on Thanksgiving

WILLMAR — On Thanksgiving 482 runners, plus walkers, got up early to do the Turkey Leg 5k, a 3.1 mile run on the southeast city streets.

With the temp at 22 degrees for the 8 a.m. start at the YWCA, participants easily earned a second helping of mashed potatoes and stuffing later in the day.

The numbers were down slightly from the record 522 finishers in 2012. This was the final race in the Glacial Lakes Championship Running Series for 2013.

Undaunted by the chill, Zack Montijo, 23, of Minneapolis, wearing a summer track outfit, raced to the lead and went unchallenged winning in 16:39. Nadir Yusuf, 16, of Willmar was runner-up in 17:22.

Willmar High School junior Samantha Hanson won the women’s race a second year in a row in 20:13, compared to her winning time of 20:03 in 2012. Tracy Sik, 43, of Willmar moved up from sixth a year ago to second place in 20:23, almost one minute faster than her time a year ago.
