Running: The heat is on

SPICER -- The place to be early Sunday at Green Lake was in the water not trudging about its 12-mile perimeter.

Still, 140 males and 101 females made their way around the 5, 400-acre jewel in liquid heat that could poach an egg.

It was still and 74 degrees at 7 a.m. and in the low 80s an hour and a half later with more than half the field still on the road.

"There were a few wobblers at the end," said race director Dan Hubbard. "We had one person transported by ambulance and six or seven treated briefly in the EMT tent."

The 38th annual 12-mile race attracted 264 registrations but more than a dozen pre-registrations packets were left untapped. Headquarters for the Pickle-timed event was Zorbaz Restaurant, whose back deck accommodated the post-race program.

Runners, it seems, reacted to the conditions by wisely adjusting their pace downward, although some surely still ran a personal best.

John Curley, 19, of Windom and North Dakota State posted a winning time of 1:15.28, about eight minutes more than the winning time each of the past two years.

Kathryn Stalnaker, 20, of Clara City and Concordia College, came in at 1:28.20, six minutes more than the winning time a year ago.

"It was hot out there but it's not like the heat came up all of a sudden," said Curley, referring to unusually high mercury readings much of June.

Curley ran conservatively until the last two miles when he kicked his pace up to 5:40 miles, compared to a 12-mile average of 6:18. He reached the 8-mile mark on the lake's north side in third place behind Christos Jensen, 33, of Hutchinson, who finished second, and Thomas Seifert, 16, of Willmar who would come in third.

Stalnaker, who finished second at the Foot Lake 4 in Willmar a week earlier, ran with Willmar native Susan Engelhart, 36, of Jordan the first two-thirds of the race. The former MACCRAY runner who qualified for the MIAC 1500 this spring pulled away in the closing miles, along the lake's west side, to win 39 seconds. Sara Deruyck, 43, of Seattle was third in 1:30.08.

Water stops every two miles allowed runners the opportunity to stay hydrated.

"We sure owe a lot to the volunteers and EMT's who were kept pretty busy," said Hubbard.

The 241 finishers compares to 265 last year and 248 the year before.

Stalnaker, who will be a college junior this fall, makes it the third straight year a runner with Clara City roots has won this July 4th race. Gretchen (Ammermann) Amundson, now of St. Cloud, won the past two years but did not run this time. No recent overall winner was in the field.

Curley ran here two years ago placing 13th in 1:19 as a 17-year-old student at Windom. He's friends with Jay Grandprey, 51, of Windom, a veteran of this race, who finished 13th overall. The Bison redshirt freshman also has ties to the area: his father, Dr. Mike Curley, a veterinarian, is a DeGraff native and Benson graduate.

Two St. Cloud regulars here, Joe Buckentine, 49, and Bob Kovell, 59, continue to tear up the course. Buckentine placed fourth overall and Kovell was runner-up in his age group.

Race czar Hubbard had no report by noon on the evacuated runner who was picked up while struggling near the Ole Mille Inn, about nine miles out on the course.

While a few went home with trophies and others with an age-group medal, anyone who completed the 12-mile lap on the hot Minnesota morning could rest easy the remainder of the day personifying "When the going gets tough, the tough start running."
