RENVILLE -- Russell J. Bakker, 76, of Renville, died Thursday at RenVilla Nursing Home in Renville. He had suffered from cancer.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, north of Renville. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Renville and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

He was born June 22, 1932, in Crooks Township, Renville County, to Helmer and Jennie (Decknatel) Bakker. He attended country school at Renville County District 105 and later graduated from Renville High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 in the 187th Airborne Battalion.

He married Doris Zimmer on March 27, 1955, in Olivia. They farmed near Clara City for a couple of years, and in 1957 they returned to the Renville area to farm. In 1970, they moved to the Bakker family homestead where they farmed until retirement. He was also a bus driver for the Renville Public Schools.

He was a lifelong member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church where he served on the church board and was a Sunday School teacher.

He is survived by his children: Jerine (and Paul) Berndt of Grand Rapids, Paul (and Diane) Bakker of Willmar and Ann Bakker of Marshall; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters: Loretta (and Eldon) Krueger of Olivia and Berdelle (and Robert) Enestvedt of Sacred Heart; and one brother: Morris (and Vickie) Bakker of Albuquerque, N.M.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997, one brother and an infant sister.
