WILLMAR -- The senior coronation ceremony kicked off this week's Willmar Fests activities.

The ceremony Wednesday at the Willmar Community Center honored Willmar Fests Senior Ambassadors of the past and present with a video slideshow featuring photos of the Senior Citizens Club, classic songs sung by the seniors and the crowning of the new royalty.

After a brief farewell, former senior ambassadors Suzie Drexler and Tom Thompson passed on their crowns to Myron and Elaine Frank, who will now represent Willmar as the 2012-2013 Willmar Fests Senior Ambassadors.

Shirley Lohse, president of the Senior Citizens Club, said they were chosen for their fun and caring personalities.

After the coronation committee puts together a list of candidates, the Senior Citizen Club votes. Other candidates on the ballot were Jordan and Jeanette Larson.

It's mostly about personality, Lohse said. "It's just who the people love and how helpful they've been."

As the new ambassadors, Myron and Elaine Frank will be invited to surrounding towns to participate in parades and represent Willmar.

"It's a great opportunity to meet people and make friends you never would have met," said Lohse, who was crowned senior queen in 2007. "We really have good times."
