Sheriff says he'll sign bison neglect complaint
FORT YATES, N.D. (AP) -- The Sioux County sheriff says he'll sign a neglect complaint against the ranch along the North Dakota-South Dakota border where hundreds of bison broke loose.
Sheriff Frank Landeis says the bison have been rounded up and moved to feedlots in South Dakota.
The animals belong to Wilder Ranch, part of a corporation owned by Maurice Wilder of Clearwater, Fla.
North Dakota and South Dakota state veterinarians are investigating complaints that the animals that pushed out of the far north end of the ranch pasture are sick and starving.
South Dakota State Veterinarian Sam Holland said he should have an inspection report this week.
Landeis says about 1,000 starving bison have been ranging more than a dozen miles from Wilder Ranch feedlots.
