Six from area are state champions

ST. PAUL -- Not since 1992 has the area brought home more gold medals from the state individual wrestling tournament than this season.

A total of six wrestlers from coverage area won state titles at Xcel Energy Center on Saturday.

Kevin Steinhaus of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg won his third straight Class A state title and was joined in the winner's circle by teammates Mitchell Hagen and Joel Bauman. Steinhaus won the 160-pound crown, Hagen at 171 and Bauman at 189. Those three also went 3-0 in team competition to help the Fighting Saints (see above) win the state team title as well.

Jon Kerzman of Paynesville won at 135 pounds in Class A and Ryan Thompson of Benson was the Class A 145-pound champion.

In Class AA, Ryan Swenson of Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley captured the 135-pound crown.
