Slippery roads likely if predicted snowfall hits west central Minnesota

WILLMAR - Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling today.

Anticipated snowfall could create slippery driving conditions, said Diane Beck, a spokeswoman from the Minnesota Department of Transportation's Willmar Office.

There is an 80 percent chance of snow forecasted for this afternoon that could drop 1-3 inches in west central Minnesota.

In a news release issued this morning, Beck said drivers should be patient and pay attention to driving on snowy roads.

Mn/DOT recommends the following for safe winter driving:

* Always use seat belts, and headlights must be turned on when it is snowing or sleeting.

* Adjust speed to road and weather conditions - lower speeds minimize crashes.

* Move over one lane from any stopped emergency vehicle.

* Keep a safe stopping distance between vehicles, and leave extra room between your vehicle and

snowplows or other snow removal equipment.

* Know your brakes and how they react on snow-covered roads.

* Clear snow and ice from vehicle windows, hood, headlights, brake lights and directional signals.

* Do not use cruise-control.
