Snowfall begins in Willmar, heavy and wet snow falling in region

WILLMAR -- The blizzard storm system that hammered North and South Dakota on Monday is now bringing snowfall to Willmar and west central Minnesota.


A winter storm warning in effect until 7 p.m. tonight, with blowing snow and possible near-blizzard conditions in some areas of the state.

Snow began falling in Willmar about 6:45 a.m. this morning. Today's snow will be wet and heavy.

The National Weather Service is forecasting snow and sleet in the morning in the Willmar region. Snow and sleet accumulation will become heavy at times in the afternoon, with expectations of 1 to 5 inches. Northeast winds will be 20 to 25 mph.

Snowfall in the west central Minnesota west and north of Willmar will be heavy, reaching 6 to 8 inches or more.

The National Weather Service says 5.8 inches of snow fell in Fargo Monday, breaking the previous record of 2.8 inches set in 1977.

An additional 7 to 14 inches in Fargo is forecast to fall Tuesday. The current record snowfall for the day is 3.4 inches, set in 1962.
