Special picnic lunch planned Wednesday for seniors
WILLMAR -- Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, in conjunction with the Willmar Veterans of Foreign Wars Men's Auxiliary, will be hosting an Independence Day-themed lunch Wednesday for any senior 60 years or older.
The lunch will be a $2 picnic at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Willmar Community Center, located on North Highway 71, across from Robbins Island. Kandiyohi Area Transit will be offering rides to and from the event for $2.
The Senior Lassies with be putting on a musical program after the lunch.
Claudia Cederstrom, the administrator of the Senior Nutrition Program for Lutheran Social Service in Willmar, said the "Two Buck Wednesday" program isn't new.
"We've been serving a sponsored meal once a month since February," Cederstrom said.
Each month, the meals are sponsored by a different community organization.
"This is the first time the VFW has sponsored a meal," Cederstrom said. "We're making a bigger deal of this meal since it is in honor of Independence Day."
Cederstrom said the program has been successful so far, serving 50 to 130 people each month.
"Our goal with the meals is to make people more aware of our (Senior Nutrition Program)," she said. "It isn't income-based. It is for every senior over the age of 60."
