SPICER — Spicer WinterFest 2014 activities are planned for the next three weekends — and then some — in Spicer.

Events for the annual celebration start Friday with the kick-off of the annual art exhibit and wine tasting event, and run through Feb. 22, culminating with the Green Lake Snowmobile All Class Drag Race.

The outdoor activities include the Frozen 5K, a medallion hunt and the lighting ceremony and fireworks at 7 p.m. Saturday on Saulsbury Beach in Spicer. There will be cartoon characters in the crowd from 6 to 7 p.m., sponsored by the Kandiyohi Men’s Club, leading up to the lighting ceremony.

The 2014 Polar Plunge, sponsored by the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office and the Willmar Police Department, is set for 1 p.m. Jan. 25. The annual event is a fundraiser for Special Olympics Minnesota.

And, once again, there’s a “pretty awesome snow slide” built along the sands of Saulsbury Beach to take sliders down onto the shores of Green Lake. Kids — and grownups too — can take their sled or tube and have some fun on the slide.

Outdoor activities also include snowmobile drag races, ice skating on the outdoor rink at Prairie Meadows and the annual men’s softball tournament at the Green Lake Diamonds.

The second annual Kid’s Carnival will be from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Prairie Meadows. Admission is $3 per family. New this year is a “business passport” with details available at participating businesses and on spicermn.com. Glacial Ridge Winery will have something from each Saturday afternoon starting with the art exhibit and wine tasting this weekend and ending on Feb. 8 featuring local chocolate makers. There will be live entertainment weekend nights at both O’Neil’s and Zorbaz.

Also new this year is a Ski and Sleigh Festival on Feb. 16 at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center.

There are a lot of events going on — something for everyone.
