WILLMAR -- Members of the Governor's Early Learning Council were impressed with the level of cooperation between public and private institutions to encourage literacy in young children when they visited Willmar on Tuesday.

The group held its first meeting outside the Twin Cities area, and its members toured Jefferson Learning Center in Willmar. The former elementary school building is the base for early childhood education and adult basic education in the Willmar School District.

The visitors said they were pleased to hear about collaborations with other groups, from law enforcement to nonprofit agencies to the Willmar Stingers baseball team.

During its afternoon meeting, the council members discussed the plans for a $45 million, four-year federal Race to the Top grant designated for early childhood programs.
