State Golf: Dawson-Boyd boys wins Class A championship

BECKER — Two Dawson-Boyd boys placed among the top 10 golfers in the Minnesota Class A State Golf Tournament and the Blackjacks claimed the team title by 15 strokes over second-place United South Central in the tournament’s final day Wednesday at Pebble Creek Golf Club.

 The Blackjacks finished the two-day tournament with a 660 and United South Central was second at 675.

 

 D-B’s Christian Thoen placed sixth shooting a two-day total of 156. Teammate Easton Popma was 10th at 160.

 

 The Blackjacks’ Cameron Kemen shot 171 to tie for 36th and Spenser Erickson placed tied for 39th with a 173. BOLD’s Ethan Weis also shot 174.

 

 Two other Blackjacks, Dalton Palmer and Jared Monson, shot 187 and 189, respectively.

 

 Mitch McCosh of Yellow Medicine East shot 163 to tie for 14th, and MACCRAY’s Brady Madsen shot 167 to tie for 20th.

 

 In the Class AA tournament in Jordan, Litchfield’s Josh Polingo shot 149 to tie for 12th and Minnewaska’s Brett Buckingham shot 150 to tie for 16th.

 

 In the Class AAA tournament in Coon Rapids, Willmar’s Hunter Mottinger shot 77 on Tuesday and a 76 on Wednesday to finish at 153. Cardinals teammate Tony Kallevig recovered from a first-day 83 on Tuesday and shot 76 on Wednesday to finish at 159. Class AAA Boys

BOLD girls second

 

 In Class A at Pebble Creek, 2013 champion Legacy Christian Academy of Andover barreled by first-day leader BOLD by matching the Warriors’ first-day total of 365.

 

 BOLD had a two-stroke lead on Legacy after the first-round at Sand Creek but flared to a 377 on Wednesday.

 

 Legacy totaled 718 strokes to BOLD’s 732, still good for second in the program’s first State trip, one stroke up on third-place Fillmore Central of Harmony.

 

 For the Section 5A champs, Breann Mertens filed an 86 each day to finish in a three-way tie for seventh. Ashley Schmitz placed 23rd, Liza Reinert 30th and Lanie Altmann 35th.

 

 Peyton Miller of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa tied for 27th.

 Detroit Lakes made it three in a row rolling to a 58-stroke victory over second plae Pequot Lakes. Red Wing took third (650) while five-time champion Minnewaska Area of Glenwood placed fourth (687) at Sand Creek in Jordan.

 

 Jenna Janu topped the Lakers’ lineup shooting 80-80-160, tie for tenth. Ashlyn Guggisberg (85-82-167) tied for 22nd. Kennedy Sommerfield of Litchfield shot 87-83-170 to tie for 27th.

Alex 2nd AAA girls

 

 Central Lakes champion Alexandria (641) finished second to Wayzata (622) in Class AAA at Bunker Hill. Kanzi Nelsen of New Prague was medalist (67-68-135). Alexandria, the only outstate team in the field, was led by third-place Amanda Bigger (77-71-148).
