Stearns Co., Minn., deputy treated, released after squad struck by semi

AVON -- A Stearns County Sheriff's deputy was treated and released at St. Cloud Hospital after his squad car was struck by a semi-tractor and trailer that lost control along Interstate 94 in Avon Township.

According to a news release from Sheriff John Sanner, Deputy Steve Mathews was seated in the squad that was parked along the shoulder of the interstate with the emergency lights activated. Mathews and the State Patrol were responding to a motor vehicle accident with injuries around 4:30 a.m. this morning.

The State Patrol is investigating both the original accident and the crash involving the Stearns County squad vehicle. Also responding were the Avon Fire and Rescue Squad, Gold Cross Ambulance and the St. Joseph Police Department.
