Stern, Rails blank Bird Island
BIRD ISLAND -- Anthony Stern spun a three-hitter and struck out 13 as the Willmar Rails drubbed the Bird Island Islanders 10-0 in a Cornbelt League baseball game on Wednesday night.
Matt Seehusen uncorked a towering two-run homer to left-center field in the third inning, scoring Josh Dahlke, who led off the inning with a single.
In the eighth inning, the Rails (1-1) scored twice when Matt Sagedahl singled and scored on Dahlke's triple. Dahlke scored on an error for the 10th run.
Stern did not walk a batter and only went to a three-ball count twice all night. He struck out at least one batter in every inning, including the side in the fourth.
Sagedahl, Dahlke and Matt Carlson had three hits each for Willmar. Carlson and Dahlke also drove in two runs each. Seehusen had two hits.
Mitch Maxwell had two hits for Bird Island (0-2). Brad Gass started for the Islanders and was tagged with the loss. He gave up eight hits and eight runs (four earned) in four innings. Eric Gass finished and allowed six hits and one earned run in four innings.
