Steve 'Buckshot' Kufrin Oct. 24, 1942 - Sept. 20, 2009
PRIOR LAKE -- Steve Karl "Buckshot" Kufrin, 66, of Prior Lake, formerly of Benson, died Sunday from cancer.
The service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Prior Lake.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home in Prior Lake and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
He was born Oct. 24, 1942, in New Ulm to R. Steven and Tory Kufrin. He grew up in Benson and graduated from Benson High School in 1960. He served 3½ years in the Air Force in England.
He married Jill Johnson on June 4, 1983, in Benson. He worked as a sports editor, columnist and photographer for the Swift County Monitor-News, edited Minnesota Waterfowler Magazine and, in 1990, joined the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services as a private funds coordinator. He was honored in 2005 by the Fish and Wildlife Service with the creation of the Kufrin Waterfowl Production Area. He was Outdoor News Person of the Year and, in 2005, he received the National Wetlands Conservation Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fish and Wildlife Service.
He assisted with the restoration of Hoff Slough near Benson, and other outdoor preservation projects. He helped launch chapters of Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and the Minnesota Waterfowl Association in West Central Minnesota. He was also a Big Brother for six little brothers and a Woodie Camp volunteer.
He is survived by his wife; daughters: Emily and Becca, both of Prior Lake; siblings: Tom Kufrin of Benson, Brad (and Mary Beth Nelson) Kufrin of Apple Valley and Amy (and Larry) Benoit of Rochester.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
