Stingers bounced in 11th
WILLMAR -- Brainerd scored six times in the top of the 11th inning and went to defeat the Willmar Stingers 8-3 in a Northwoods League game on Friday.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Lunkers against the Stingers.
Brainerd scored its runs in the 11th on four hits and an error. T.J. Berge and Vince Bruno had run-scoring singles in the frame.
Willmar led 2-0 in the first inning when Carlo Leyva and Isaac Ballou had consecutive singles and each moved up a base on Eduardo Gonzalez's sacrifice. Jordan Smith's single plated Leyva with the first run and Ballou scored on Sean Dwyer's sacrifice fly to center field.
But Brainerd tied the game with two runs in the top of the fourth off Stingers starter Logan Birr. The scored stayed the same until the 11th inning.
Jayson Huett relieved Birr and threw 31/3 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit. Daniel Zapata pitched 21/3 scoreless innings. Jacob Barnes was touched for two hits, while walking three and allowing six runs (three earned) in 2/3 of an inning. Michael Jahns finished.
Leyva, Ballou and Smith had two hits apiece for the Stingers, who finished with eight, all singles.
Juan Padilla pitched three innings of relief for the win for Brainerd.
Willmar hosts Thunder Bay today at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
