Stingers lost Saturday, rained out Sunday
ST. CLOUD -- The Willmar fell two games behind the front-running St. Cloud River Bats after being blanked 5-0 by the Duluth Huskies Saturday night at Bill Taunton Stadium.
Willmar dropped to 11-9 in the second half of the season and 27-24 overall. St. Cloud leads the division with a 13-7 record.
Willmar's game at St. Cloud Sunday night was postponed due to inclement weather. The teams will play two seven-inning games today beginning at 6:05 p.m. at Joe Faber Field.
Duluth starter Josh Renfro (3-3) blanked the Stingers on seven hits through eight innings for the win. Jacob Bax pitched the ninth and allowed one hit.
Willmar starter Matt Collins was sharp in his third start of the season. The right-hander from Central Florida allowed six hits and four runs (two earned) over 7Zc innings. He walked one and struck out four. Daniel Zapata and Sean Dwyer finished.
Willmar matched Duluth with eight hits each. But the Stingers never had consecutive hits in any inning and left nine runners on base. Mitch Delfino and Jordan Smith had two hits apiece for Willmar.
The Stingers return home Tuesday for a three-game series with the Rochester Honkers. Tuesday is Trading Card Night in which the first 250 fans will receive a full set of Stingers baseball trading cards.
