Stingers make six miscues in loss to St. Cloud

WILLMAR -- St. Cloud clubbed 16 hits and took advantage of six Willmar errors to remain in first place in the North Division of the Northwoods League by collecting a 12-5 win Monday.

Mitch Garver and Kevin Hall had three hits each to help the River Bats (11-6) score in every inning except the first and fifth. St. Cloud plated three runs in the second. Willmar (9-9) responded by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the River Bats would score six more runs before Willmar would produce another run.

St. Cloud starter Jason Wheeler worked around seven hits in six innings to pick up the win.

The tall left-hander struck out five and walked run.

Carlos Leyva, batting in the leadoff spot, Eduardo Gonzalez and Anthony Bemboom had two hits apiece as Willmar was outhit 16-9. Gonzalez drove in two runs with a single in the second and a double in the ninth.

Logan Birr, who played for the River Bats last season, had a rough outing to get tagged with the loss. The right-hander surrendered 10 hits and six runs in 3Xc innings of work. The River Bats were able to score at least one run off four Stinger pitchers.

Willmar's Jordan Smith, the North Division's leading hitting, went 0-for-2 to drop his batting average to .417.

The two teams meet today for a doubleheader at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud. The first game starts at 1 p.m. with the night cap starting at 7:05 p.m.
