Stingers notebook: Smith assigned to double-A

WILLMAR — With baseball season underway, former Willmar Stingers players are receiving their minor league assignments for 2014.

The Stingers had 23 alumni receive professional playing time in 2013 and they’re all expected to be back with their same organizations, led by Willmar native Jordan Smith who will make his double-A debut with the Akron Rubber Ducks in the Cleveland Indians system.

Smith hit .292 with a .368 on-base percentage and .400 slugging percentage for the class-A Carolina Mudcats in 2013.

He will be the second former Stinger to reach double-A — the first was Anthony Bemboom for a short time last season.

Hunter Dozier, the eighth overall pick of the 2013 MLB draft, is headed for high class-A Wilmington in the Carolina League.

Team assignments for 13 of the 23 players have been confirmed via official team announcements.

They are:

Mitch Delfino, San Jose Giants (A, Giants)

Hunter Dozier, Wilmington Blue Rocks (A, Royals)

Sean Dwyer, Modesto Nuts (A, Rockies)

Ricky Knapp, Savannah Sand Gnats (A, Mets)

Jason Leblebijian, Lansing Lugnuts (A, Blue Jays)

Mikey Reynolds, Rome Braves (A, Braves)

Joe Sever, Carolina Mudcats (A, Indians)

Jordan Smith, Akron Rubber Ducks (AA, Indians)

Not every organization has released its minor league rosters, and the remaining 10 players have not appeared on an official 2014 roster yet.

They are: Forrestt Allday, Dillon Haupt, Max Homick, Scott Lieser, Jerad McCrummen, Kurt Spomer, Pat Stover, Thomas Taylor and Andre Wheeler.

Stinnett, Murray both Pitcher of the Week again

Maryland senior righthander Jake Stinnett earned the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Pitcher of the Week award for the third time this season on March 24.

The 2011 Stinger held N.C. State to four hits over eight scoreless innings and struck out 14 on March 21.

Stinnett is 3-3 this season with a 2.16 ERA and 57 strikeouts over 50 innings.

Florida Gulf Coast starter and 2013 Stinger Michael Murray is matching Stinnett, earning the weekly award in the Atlantic Sun Conference on March 24.

Murray fanned 10 over eight innings against USC-Upstate on March 21.

He is 6-0 this season with a 0.50 ERA with 53 strikeouts in 53.2 innings.
