Stingers sending 4 to NWL All-Star game
WILLMAR — Michael Suchy made his second straight Northwoods League All-Star team, and will be joined by three Willmar Stingers teammates at the June 23 game in Eau Claire, Wis.
Stingers’ pitchers Abe Bobb and Colin Poche earned selections, as well as first baseman Marc Flores.
Suchy, the Stingers’ cleanup hitter, was one of the breakout stars of the 2012 season, hitting .349 with eight home runs and setting a franchise record with 62 RBIs.
Suchy’s follow-up campaign has been almost as good. Through 42 games, he’s hitting .320 with seven homers and 17 RBIs, and is second in the NWL with a 1.027 OPS.
Flores, who is third in the NWL in OPS at 1.025 in the cleanup spot for Willmar, has paired with Suchy to form one of the most potent No. 3-4 combinations in the league.
He’s hitting .340 and has a league-leading .613 slugging percentage. His nine home runs and 39 RBIs both rank second in the NWL.
Bobb anchored the Stingers’ pitching staff through the first half, going 5-0 in five starts with a league-leading 1.13 ERA. He was shut down after his start on Tuesday and is unlikely to play in the All-Star game, according to Stingers’ co-owner Ryan Voz.
Poche joined the team in mid-June but has been dominant in his 22 innings.
In seven games, which includes three starts, his ERA is 2.04 and he’s struck out 26 while walking just two.
