Stingers split twin bill with MoonDogs
MANKATO — The Willmar Stingers took a split with the Mankato MoonDogs in Thursday’s doubleheader at Franklin Rogers Park.
The Stingers won 5-0 in Game 2, taking an early lead on a two-run single from Nick Halamandaris.
Willmar starter Colin Poche threw five shutout innings and struck out seven.
The Stingers improved to 16-7 and are in first place in the Northwoods League North Division.
They play the MoonDogs again 7:05 p.m. today at Bill Taunton Stadium.
In Game 1, the MoonDogs touched up Willmar starter Chris Kubitz for six first-inning runs and overpowered the Stingers 10-7.
Mankato shortstop Josh Fuentes belted a three-run home run off Kubitz, who allowed five hits and two walks in the first.
The Stingers made a game of it, scoring seven runs on nine hits. Max Kuhn and Zack Tillery each had two-run doubles, and Kuhn was 2-for-3.
Tillery struck out looking with the bases loaded to end the top of the sixth representing the go-ahead run.
Kubitz was removed after one inning in favor of Joe Kirkland, who worked three innings, And Cody Hughes finished with two scoreless.
