Stingers split two with Duluth
DULUTH -- Scott Sommerfeld hit a two-run walkoff home run with one out in the last of the eighth inning to give Duluth a 5-4 win over the Willmar Stingers in the second game of a Northwoods League doubleheader Sunday.
Willmar (5-6) won the opener 9-1 behind two hits and three RBI from Jordan Smith.
Saturday's scheduled game was postponed due to rain and two seven-inning games were played on Sunday.
In the second game, Willmar fell behind 3-0 after five innings before mounting a comeback with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. The Stingers then tied the game in the top of the seventh when Andrew Haake and Bryan Willson singled and pinch-runner Zach Rowles scored on a squeeze bunt by Matt Serna.
The Stingers moved in front 4-3 when Smith singled, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on Eduardo Gonzalez's groundout.
But the Huskies rallied off Daniel Zapata in the bottom of the eighth on a double by Tyler Albright and a home run by Sommerfeld.
In the opener, Willmar outhit Duluth (5-5) 8-5 with Smith driving in three runs with a pair of hits. Isaac Ballou also had two hits and drove in a run and Sean Dwyer doubled home two runs in the fourth inning.
Cedric Pomerlee worked 51/3 innings for the win, allowing four hits and one run. He walked two and struck out four. Jeff Barto gave up one hit over 12/3 innings.
Willmar and Duluth play the final game of the three-game series at 7:05 p.m. today in Duluth. Willmar then has Tuesday off before hosting Rochester on Wednesday.
