WILLMAR -- After combining for 43 runs in the previous two games, Sunday's Northwoods League game for the Willmar Stingers against Thunder Bay was tame.

The Border Cats scored three runs in the first inning, then held off the Stingers 3-2 at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Willmar (9-8) won Friday's series opener 14-10, then clubbed Thunder Bay 12-7 on Saturday. The loss ends the Stingers' four-game winning streak.

Thunder Bay (6-10) started the game by getting the first five batters on base with a walk, a Willmar error and three straight singles. Three runs scored and this game looked like the start of the last two.

But Willmar starting pitcher Jeff Barto settled down beginning in the second inning. He gave up only one more hit in the next five frames.

Thunder Bay's Michael Woytek didn't have much trouble holding down the Stingers through the first five innings. He allowed just two hits and got out of a couple of jams with a runner at third in the first and fourth innings.

But the Stingers got two of their four hits off Woytek in the sixth. Jordan Smith hit his second home run of the season with Jared Norris on base to cut the lead to 3-2. Sean Dwyer followed with a triple, but was stranded.

The Border Cats' bullpen pitched three hitless innings of relief and didn't allow a Stinger to get past second base. Drew Erwin earned his sixth save of the year in the ninth.

Tyler Nivins had three of Thunder Bay's four hits and drove in one run.

Smith had the only multi-hit game for the Stingers.

The Stingers will host Twins Day at the game against St. Cloud today. Twins great Tony Oliva will throw out the first pitch.
