Stingers sweep Alex in doubleheader
ALEXANDRIA — Michael Suchy and Marc Flores homered and the Willmar Stingers rolled past Alexandria 13-6 in Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Knute Nelson Memorial Park.
T.J. Whidby worked 4.2 innings and struck out four, and Andrew Crook pitched the remaining 2.1 in the seven-inning game.
Max Kuhn was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Danny Brennan had three hits and three RBIs.
Alec Sole and Suchy each had two hits and scored three runs.
The Stingers trailed 4-2 going into the seventh inning of Game 2, but tied it on a Brian Olson RBI single. They scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth when Flores doubled to score Jake Gronsky, who had reached on a hit-by-pitch. Bret Dahlson pitched a clean bottom half, striking out two, to get the save. The Stingers improved to 14-6 in the Northwoods League North Division. They are in first place, one game ahead of Waterloo, and play 7:05 p.m. today against Alexandria at Bill Taunton Stadium.
