Stingers tame Blue Anchors, move into first-place tie
WILLMAR — Colton Bottomley hit a grand slam and Logan Moon also homered, the first home runs in a Stingers uniform for both players, and Willmar powered its way past the Alexandria Blue Anchors 13-5 on Monday at Bill Taunton Stadium.
The Stingers improved to 8-4 and are tied with the Waterloo Bucks for first place in the Northwoods League North Division. They travel to Mankato today for a 7:05 p.m. game against the MoonDogs.
The Blue Anchors took an early 2-0 lead off Stinger starter T.J. Whidby, but the Stingers scored three in the home half of the third and scored at least one run in every inning for the remainder of the game.
Bottomley had 3 hits and 3 runs scored, and Zack Tillery was 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Sheldon Lee, in his Stingers’ debut, earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. He struck out 2 and walked 1.
Alec Sole drove in the first run for the Stingers with an RBI single in the third. Alexandria second baseman Aaron Overbeck made an error on the play allowing a second run to come in, and Sole scored the go-ahead run on a Tillery single.
Alexandria starter Corey Fitzgerald lasted 3 1/3 innings and surrendered five runs to take the loss.
