ALEXANDRIA -- A five-run second inning that was fueled by two Willmar errors allowed Alexandria to edge the Stingers 6-3 in a Northwoods League Northern Division baseball game Monday.

The first-place Beetles (9-5) had five runners reach base consecutively before Willmar (8-7) recorded an out in the second. Taylor Davis and Will Miller sandwiched singles between Brandon Garcia drawing a walk to load the bases to open the inning.

Chad Bunting then drove in Davis with another single before Stingers' shortstop Zach Rowles committed an error that allowed Marcus Semien to reach and Garcia and Miller to score. A groundout pushed Bunting across before Stingers' third baseman Mitch Delfino made an error that allowed Semien to score and give the Beetles a quick 5-0 lead.

Kolby Wood benefited from the five-run inning to pick up his second win of the year. Wood (2-1) worked the first five innings and struck out six while surrendering four hits, including a solo home run to Eduardo Gonzalez to lead off the Willmar fifth. It was the first home run of the year for Gonzalez.

The Stingers produced another run in the fifth when Rowles scored on a wild pitch from Wood.

Willmar starter Roy Metter (1-3) got tagged with the loss after lasting just three innings.

The right-hander gave up five hits and three walks. Jeff Barto followed with four scoreless innings of relief before giving up a run in the eighth on Davis' solo home run. Barto gave up just two other hits without issuing a walk and striking out two.

Jordan Smith knocked in Willmar's other run when he singled in Matt Serna, who was 2-for-3, in the eighth.

Davis, Garcia and Miller -- the No. 6, 7 and 8 hitters -- had two hits apiece to ignite the Beetles.

The same teams square off today at 7:05 p.m., this time at Bill Taunton Stadium as the Stingers return to Willmar for a five-game homestand. Willmar went 5-4 on their recent road trip.
