A stone-cold success
WILLMAR -- The Willmar Curling Club continues to grow from a humble start here eight years ago.
The 5th annual New Year's Bonspiel starts Friday evening and concludes Sunday at noon on the Blue Line Arena rink. Sponsored by the Willmar Curling Club, teams will come from around the state, including Bemidji and St. Paul.
The A and B Curling League has 26 teams this winter. Demand for playing time is so great, Civic Center supervisor Kevin Madsen added a Thursday Early League from 5-7 p.m. Regular league play is Wednesday evenings.
The Civic Center has also added an adaptive and wheelchair curling program on Thursday afternoon's from 3-5 p.m. The cost is $2 per visit or $30 for the entire winter program. Trained instructors will work with participants.
On Jan. 28th, Willmar will host a Wheelchair Curling Clinic from 5-8 p.m. Madsen said this is specifically designed for disabled veterans. A group of disabled veterans is coming from Wisconsin to run and teach at the one-day clinic, Madsen said.
