Streed, Horning receive Willmar’s Lions Award
WILLMAR — Heather Horning and Zech Streed have been named the outstanding athletes in the 2013 Willmar High School senior class as symbolized by the Lions Award.
The Senior Athletic Awards Program was held Monday evening and sponsored annually by the Noon Lions Club. Activities director Ryan Blahosky hosted the event and introduced the keynote speaker, Kevin Schlagel, St. Cloud State University men’s head basketball coach.
Presenters included Ken Heitzman, Mike Fischer, Scott Hisken, Neil Schendel, Mike Fischer and Clark Vollan, the latter presenting the Lions Award.
Heather Horning — Tennis, basketball, softball … Coaches key comments: “A natural athlete nurtured by older brothers she worked hard through injury to reach her full potential while at the same time both pushing and supporting every one of her teammates” … “Heather is going to do whatever it takes to be the best. She was a phenomenal leader and role model for younger players on and off the court.”
Zech Streed — Football, hockey, golf …. Coaches key comments: “As a teammate, Zech’s leadership, dedication and work ethic set the tone for the entire team. He is the type of player every successful team needs. He’s a ‘keeper.’ ” …. “If you were going to build a high school football player, Zech would be the mold. The ultimate Team Guy he loved to play the game. He led by example and was respected by his peers and coaches.”
Jim Helin Memorial Scholarship
Emily Minnick — Gymnastics, volleyball, track and field … Key observation: “Emily’s positive attitude, energy, and desire to win are a few of the things that helped her to excel.”
Alex Grove — Football, basketball, track and field … Key observation: “One of the most impressive things about Alex is that if you put him in a room of 70- year-olds and 7-year-olds he would stand tall and confidently to be a part of whatever was going on. That is the type of person he is.”
Cardinals True Grit
Kassy Linbo — Tennis, basketball, softball … Coaches key comment: “Kassy is the glue that holds a team together with her team spirit and enthusiasm.”
Thomas Nilles-Melchert — Soccer, cross-country, swimming, tennis …. Key comment: “I would love to have Tom on my team every year” … “His attitude and effort are the epitome of what every athlete should strive for.”
Dean Anderson Memorial Scholarship
Cass Herzog — Football, wrestling … Keys observations: “One of Central Lakes Conference dominant linemen” … top heavyweight in CLC, 33-0 regular season and team MVP senior year.
Cassandra Johnson — Cross-Country, gymnastic, track and field … state appearances in all three … Key comment: “A consummate competitor always willing to go the extra mile; distinguish by the quality of her hard work.”
Lane Erickson Memorial Scholarship
Connor Haugen — Football, cross-country, swimming, track and field … Key comment: “His efforts in athletics, extracurricular activities and the classroom exemplify the very best that Willmar High School has to offer.”
Rose Jackson — Swimming, track and field … keys: 3-time state qualifier and all-state in track and field, state qualifier in swimming … “Soft-spoken, humble yet fearless in competition; she’s a leader.”
