First-year carpentry students from Ridgewater College spent Tuesday framing at the latest house being built by Habitat for Humanity of West Central Minnesota. The house, the 14th to be built by the local Habitat chapter and located on Northwood Court Northwest in Willmar, is the product of a partnership between Habitat and the college.

"From foundation to shingles, it's being done by students," said Jake Pulsifer, Ridgewater's first-year carpentry instructor.

Pulsifer was on the site Tuesday with his students, giving them pointers as they built and then erected the frame, section by section. Second-year students laid the foundation and did site layout, Pulsifer said.

Students in Ridgewater's electrician program are also working on the project, according to an August news release by Habitat. The house will be the future home of Angie and Albert Martinez, their three children and a niece. Family will contribute "sweat equity" in the construction of their home, the release stated.

Ridgewater recently announced it plans to suspend its second-year carpentry program, but will redesign and maintain its first-year carpentry program. The second-year program could be revived if demand increases.
