ATWATER -- A request to hold a special election to gain voter approval to sell liquor on Sundays in Atwater was turned down Wednesday by the Atwater City Council.

The issue may turn up, however, on the general election ballot.

The owners of Phat Pheasant, a supper club in Atwater, wants the ability to sell liquor on Sundays and had requested the special election.

State law currently prohibits the sale of Sunday liquor unless voters agree to allow the Sunday sales.

City Administrator Goldie Smith said the City Council would've considered holding a special election if the town's other bar/restaurant, IDK, was also interested in serving Sunday liquor. Owners of that establishment said they weren't interested, Smith said, and the City Council said it wouldn't conduct an expensive special election for one business.

She said, however, the City Council expressed an interest in putting the issue on the general election ballot in 2012. Further City Council action would be needed for that to happen.

- In other action this week, the City Council granted an exception to its ordinance to allow residents from the Sunnyview assisted living facility to ride in a golf cart on city streets in town.

Currently, golf carts can be driven between the golf course and a residence, but cannot be driven casually around town to businesses or other homes.

The assisted living facility wants to use a golf cart to give residents outings around town.

As part of the agreement with the City Council, the cart will be clearly marked with a Sunnyview logo. Only staff at the facility will ne able to operate the vehicle.
