Tennis: Fragodt/James win 6A doubles title; Litchfield advances three
COLLEGEVILLE -- Daniel Fragodt and Steven James of Benson came from a set down to trump Andrew Tancabel and Peter Zender of Litchfield for the Section 6A doubles crown Tuesday at St. John's University.
"The Benson guys dominated at the net," said Litchfield coach John Carlson. "They got there first and more often."
Both pairs advance to the Class A state tournament.
In singles, Matt Edin of Staples-Motley won a three-setter from Litchfield's Brian Ward 7-5, 0-6, 7-5.
"I thought Edin played fantastic tennis," said Carlson.
Both Litchfield entries were the defending 6A champions.
Ward won his semifinal match with east, blanking Nate Korfe of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 6-0, 6-0; Edin took out LPGE's No. 1 Shane Ecklund 6-4, 6-4.
Tancabel-Zender knock-ed off David Bloomquist-Brennen Sietsema of New London-Spicer 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals. Fragodt-James won against Mike Lindaman-Derek Wolhowe of Staples-Motley 6-1, 6-0.
The Class A state tournament will be held June 7-8 in Burnsville at Lifetime Fitness.
