Tennis Girls: Willmar comes up short against Fergus
FERGUS FALLS -- Erika Kath expected a tight match Tuesday with Fergus Falls, but the Willmar coach didn't get an opportunity to see all of the action.
Playing on two courts separated by "about a mile or maybe more," Fergus Falls edged Willmar 4-3 in a Central Lakes Conference dual.
The Cardinals (4-2, 4-6) grabbed the first point when senior Andrea Brown won 6-1, 6-0 at 1-singles. Seniors Leslie Marcus and Allie Ellingson won a first-set tiebreaker 8-6 at 1-doubles before not losing a game to tie the dual at 2-2 for Willmar. But the Otters, new to the conference this year, won 2- and 3-singles to pick up the win.
"We knew it would be a close match because they beat Rocori 5-2 Monday and we beat Rocori 4-3 last week," said Kath. "Andrea played just really well. She placed the ball well and moved (Lisa Koeppel) around the court a lot."
Willmar sophomore Sarah Paterson won the last match of the day with her 6-2, 6-1 victory at 4-singles.
