Terminal work under way
WILLMAR -- Warranty repairs to stop water leakage are under way at the Willmar Municipal Airport terminal.
The estimated $85,000 to $90,000 cost is being paid by airport consultant HNTB Corporation, architect Bonestroo Inc. and contractor Everstrong Construction of Redwood Falls under a memorandum of understanding ap-proved by the City Council in May.
After the $21 million airport opened in September 2006, water could be found leaking into the terminal at numerous locations during heavy rainfall. The city and the three companies met many times over the past few years to identify possible contributing factors for the leakage and possible remedies.
A couple of different fixes were tried, but nothing seemed to work. In an effort to stop the leaking and resolve all related issues, and to avoid the time and expense of legal action, the city and the companies reached agreement on the repairs, according to the memorandum.
Under the memorandum, Bonestroo designed an entirely new replacement window, including a portion of the foundation to support it. All windows in the terminal will be replaced. HNTB, Bonestroo and Everstrong will be responsible for retrofitting all the windows, rebuilding the walls under the windows, and regrading around the exterior of the building. The city will realign downspouts and rain gutters to keep water away from the building.
The work began Sept. 20 and is scheduled to be completed by the middle of October, said Megan Sauer, city planner/airport manager.
